In 1997 Tom Peters wrote a perceptive article in Fast Company on personal branding, The Brand Called You: “It’s time for me — and you — to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that’s true for anyone who’s interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work.” Fast forward 13 years with the growth of free blogging software and social networking sites it’s possible to reach new audiences (recruiters) with Brand You with no real cost. By publishing your own blog you are demonstrating committment or something different to other candidates.

Social networking websites are being used to find job vacancies. Here are some of the social networking sites which you could explore:

With some 60 million people using LinkedIn this is a network worth looking at. You can create your CV which perspective employers can search for. Importantly, through friends and colleagues you start to built up a ‘network’ of contacts.

Twitter is one of the hottest social networking sites around. Just type in the word ‘job’ in the search box and see what is revealed. Computer World reports that there are some 75 million users.

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites. Login and create a profile and build up your own network of colleagues, friends and family. You can login to their Market Place service and hunt for jobs.
